Throughout my 30 year career as a therapist working with children as young as four years old, adolescence and adulthood, I have been continuously amazed by the resilience of the human character and the consistent striving for the betterment of self. What often seems to get in the way of a clients’ self-fulfillment are the negative relationships they have with the various aspects of themselves. Through the development of a trusting therapeutic relationship and the implementation of various treatment approaches such as evidence-based tools of play therapy and sand tray therapy for children, body and sensation-based therapies for clients of all ages, woven in with traditional talk therapy, the client and I gently embark on developing a kinder and more accepting relationship with self. I have had the honor of witnessing through the enhanced relationship with oneself, a client being better able to approach life’s inevitable adversities in a more emotionally regulated manner. Enhanced emotional regulation contributes to improved clarity and control over one’s choices, more satisfying interpersonal relationships, and a better sense of the mind/body connection, in all, an improved quality of life.
