Josephine Cooper

Somatic Practitioner, Reiki Master Teacher, Therapeutic Voice Educator

I am a Somatic Practitioner, Bodyworker and Educator. Somatic Experiencing is the foundation of my work and I integrate other modalities including Bodywork (Reiki), Voice and Movement/Yoga to help clients connect with their bodies, and move through stress and trauma.

Somatic Experiencing explores how our feelings, memories, conscious thoughts, behaviors and sensations are all experienced in our body. By learning how to listen more deeply, patterns of trauma and overwhelm find their way toward softening and resolution.

In my personal experience, SE and the other modalities I include in my work, gently make their way into the everyday lives of my clients. I named my practice The Body Knows Somatics, because I have experienced in myself, and had the gift of witnessing in others, the way that learning to listen to our bodies' cues, survival responses and needs - is a deeply empowering act. This new knowledge makes its way into every aspect of our lives outside of sessions. We begin to find that our bodies are not defective, but protective - and we can learn to understand the ways they protect us and unlearn the way that society has taught us to ignore, shutdown or be ashamed of our bodies protective responses.

Coming to this work, I was enlivened to find that working with trauma can be immensely hopeful. Very slowly but surely, our bodies can build capacity to connect with the beauty and vitality of life despite very challenging events from the past. It is my honor to hold space for this kind of unfolding, and to provide time, space and support as my client's nervous systems grow their capacity to find any amount of safety.

Notes:
- The modalities I offer differ from talk therapy. Rather than prioritizing only speaking the story of the events that have affected us, we make space for the felt experience of the body. While our sessions will include content, our work with always return to the bodies felt experience. Psychotherapy/talk therapy is out of my scope of practice.

- I do not take insurance at this time. Unfortunately, our healthcare system has very specific restrictions around the types of therapeutic care which are covered.

- While all are welcome, I specialize in serving LGBTQIA+ folks and allies to this community as well as folks in helping/creative fields such as therapists, birth workers, educators, activists, healers, bodyworkers and artists.
