Kirtan Coan

SE™ Practitioner

Spirithorse Psychotherapy

Formerly a professional New York actor in over 200 plays, I am now a Certified Somatic Experiencing Practitioner (SEP), Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) and Nationally Certified Counselor (NCC) also Certified in Dynamic Attachment Reprocessing Experience (DARE) and Eye-Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing (EMDR) to work with post-traumatic stress and trauma. Other trainings include Mindfulness-based therapies such as Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), and Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT) for recovery from wounds to early childhood attachment, addictions, anxiety, unipolar and bipolar depression. My underlying intention is to be present for and facilitate individual and couple acceptance and empowerment. To that end, I am currently assisting DARE Attachment workshops for Diane Poole Heller and on the road to certification as a Brainspotting therapist. Obviously, to be engaged in learning new therapeutic practices is a great joy!

Holding certificates in Mindfulness-based Stress Reduction (MBSR), (1994 under Jon Kabat-Zinn) and in Person-Centered Expressive Arts Therapy, (1998 under Natalie Rogers), in 2000 I completed course work for a doctorate in expressive arts therapy, receiving a Certificate in Advanced Graduate Studies (CAGS) from The International Graduate School in Saas Fee, Switzerland. Then I had a lot of fun teaching expressive arts courses at Omega Institute, Wake Forest University, Appalachian State University, and the University of San Simon in Cochabamba, Bolivia. Formerly a therapist in the counseling center of The University of North Carolina School of the Arts (UNCSA) and a lead clinician at The Bridge at Brookstown Treatment Center for addictions, I currently specialize in trauma and the bipolar spectrum at The Mood Treatment Center, 336 722.7266, 1615 Polo Road, Winston-Salem, 27106, where we do take insurance. In my private practice of 25 years with Spirithorse Psychotherapy, 336 624.8253, 829 Shoreland Road, 27106, sessions are not covered by insurance.
