Thayer Kyusan Case

Thayer Kyusan Case

Thayer Kyusan Case (he/him) is Director of Maverick Psychotherapy Group and works with children (through Play Therapy), adults of all ages, and families. He has particular expertise in treating grief, anxiety, depression, attachment issues, ADHD, sensory integration and mild autistic spectrum issues, stress reduction, issues with spirituality, and trauma. Thayer works very closely with parents and children in various ways – both individually and in family modalities. He invites all aspects of human experience into therapy. Thayer views therapy as facilitating a process of empowerment and discovery, unfolding in a safe place, focused on how we experience, and ultimately free ourselves from our habitual patterns in the body, thoughts and emotions. Thayer also recognizes how systemic/cultural oppression and intergenerational trauma created and creates deep wounding and works to collaborate with everyone he works to help find pathways to increase resiliency and an authentic voice.

Trauma Resolution: Drawing on his many years of training in Somatic Experiencing ®, body based psychotherapy, and decades of intensive meditation, Thayer works with many categories of trauma: car accidents, falls, surgical trauma, sexual and physical abuse, natural disasters, near death experiences, war and other forms of violence. In addition, Thayer also works with attachment-related trauma (developmental trauma) in the context of entire families or as individuals, as well as those who suffer from chronic pain or syndromes such as chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia.

Parent Coaching and Groups: Thayer understands that parenting is a deep challenge to even those with the healthiest backgrounds, particularly in our current climate of stimulation, speed, and confusing expectations for both parents and kids. For those with instability or insecurity of any kind, raising children can be extremely difficult. Thayer helps parents meet these challenges in traditional therapy and as a coach/consultant. Presentations, Trainings and Group Supervision: Thayer is available for presentations in schools, medical practices, mental health settings, and individual groups for trainings in various topics such as attachment theory, managing trauma (for all ages), and stress reduction and management in the workplace. Thayer also offers group supervision for mental health practitioners.

SE Sessions, Consults and Group Consults: Thayer assists SE trainings at all levels and is able to provide individual sessions at all levels and individual and group consults at all levels. He is also on the SEI CSS Team.

Thayer received his MSW from Columbia University, a Post Master’s Degree in Child and Adolescent Therapy from Fordham University and is a certified Somatic Experiencing Practitioner  (SEP).  Thayer is a Senior Student in the Mountains and Rivers Order of Zen Buddhism, a practice that deeply informs his work with clients. Thayer also trains and competes in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.  In addition, Thayer was awarded the Honor of Social Worker of the Year in 2011 by the HealthAlliance of the Hudson Valley.
