I am taking a sabbatical from my practice so currently not seeing clients

"Our bodies don't run from danger because we're afraid - rather, we're afraid because our bodies run." - William James 1884.

Over time we learnt to override our basic biological need to rid our systems of surplus energy after an event or shock. This ability to override the felt activation forces a residue to then become trapped in our joints, diaphragms and viscera causing various physical symptoms, which our body attempts to contain.

Animals naturally discharge from their systems all the time, they simply "shake it off" without judgment or shame. I visualise a dog shaking noticeably during a thunderstorm. I now understand this organic process needs to be supported, witnessed and completed in the safety of another attuned person

Somatic Experience has been developed to gently guides our bodies towards both discharge past events and homeostasis. These sensations, when allowed to be felt in small amounts, can be noticed without flooding or re-traumatising the person. People will, therefore, experience a reduction or disappearance of their overall symptoms over time.

Somatic Experience explains it is not the actual event which holds us back, but the residual energy that creates the impact.

My work as a psychotherapist is to support people in feeling safe enough to live their embodied life.
